After a series of very frustrating weeks, today one of our favorite contractors, J1, arrived. We were thrilled because he (like J2 and T) are among the most careful and painstaking of the crews. This meant that our project hadn’t hired another subcontractor to install the kitchen tile, but one from the primary contractor that we so admire. In a little more than half a day, J managed to install a large portion of the kitchen tile:

J did a phenomenal job figuring out the math of the install, consulting with me about the grout depth, and worked amazingly fast—even through a torrential thunderstorm that left his outside work area flooded. But one of the reasons we were so thrilled that J was doing this work and not another subcontractor (who might have been solely motivated just to get the tile up) is that J noticed that the newly installed counters have an outer lip that will not allow the range to fit! That’s why he didn’t attempt to install the tile on the wall on the right of the photo above until the counter folks fix that problem. This is why we love this contractor—they’re serious about making the project as perfect as it can be, even in an old house.
Here’s a quick look of what the same space— before expanding by four+ feet to the right—looked like just before we began the renovation:

You’ve heard my frustration at so many delays and today, I’m happy to report how well these contractors fulfill our agreement! The beauty is stunning to us!
