The paint conundrum

We do not yet have a start date, but this week we had a walk-through with our project manager, Tony, along with our designers. We are thrilled at the prospect of having rooms that are not jury-rigged and don’t have weird, badly wrought wall paint, for example.

We still have some decisions that are proving more difficult than we expected. Paint colors are one of them. We learned that we need to decide paint reasonably early so that we do NOT have to worry about paint getting onto the cabinets because they will paint the walls before installation. For the kitchen, we will have lots of natural cherry cabinets, and this tile on the wall (with more neutral grout):

The tile won’t be up against the wall paint, but paint will be close to the cherry cabinets. The counters will be a blackish quartz. Today we went to the paint store to get some ideas. Here is the current color on the walls in the kitchen and mudroom hallway. We had already updated the mudroom and hallway from a very sad tan color. The purple in the kitchen was chosen by previous owners. We didn’t bother changing it because we knew we had to do major repairs, including plumbing, that would make repainting in the meantime a waste of effort and paint.

View into mudroom hallway. The soffits will be gone. The “blackboard” (actually just blackboard paint on the wall with attached framing) is going. The dog stays!
View into the dining room, which is an Arts & Crafts grey with cherry woodwork stained a little warmer than natural. Throughout the house is cherry trim doors (instead of being painted over), and built-ins. We will be rid of the old, old phone jack!
This will be where cherry cabinets will be, but we’re going to test some of the paint colors here to check how the light plays on the walls.

Today we consulted with the folks at Sherwin Williams to get some options. We are testing those colors today. Check out the options later in this post!

When the project actually begins, workers will be here from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday–for an estimated six months. They will start on our new kitchen and 3/4 bathroom, then the master bath. Both sections include expanding the footprint of the spaces, either building out or claiming space in current use, like closets, hence the long time frame.

Here are some early samples of paint.

Paint 1 (they are coming up as I find them on my computer):

Color one connecting to dining room. This would, without the blackboard, be the main color wall.

Color 2 which, without the “blackboard”, will be a solid wall of paint connecting near the dining room as the comment above.
Color two with Dan holding the natural cherry sample
Colors 3 (left) and four (right) of cherry wood cabinet sample
Color four between cherry wood sample and historical cherry woodwork

So which do you like best? We are leaning toward one and are curious what others think!

It’s a tough decision trying to visualize the paint against the cabinets and other objects in the new design. But the paint color that has a slight green hue would look nice.

It does not look like that dog is staying!

I honestly can’t say about the colors. It’s really hard not to see it in person! The darker one looks nice, but would it be too dark? I just can’t tell….

It does look too dark after it dried completely. The conundrum continues. It happens to be cloudy today, so we can’t see how the light plays on the painted segments. Hopefully that will change soon!
