Slowwwwwwwwww

Glenn and Agda’s house took about six months to build. Our reno of their house is much, much, slower. I should acknowledge that building from scratch is easier than rebuilding and adding on to the structure. At the same time, we can see after 15 weeks on task that what should be a few days of work becomes weeks because subcontractors aren’t available, supplies are not ordered properly, and other things. Last night, I thought we might be just a couple of weeks away from a functioning kitchen and 3/4 bath. I admit that I had been assuming that work would be continuing.

Our tile subcontractor told us Friday that he would return early Monday morning. We were ready. He didn’t show, despite the company’s tools occupying our garage (so our car cannot). Later in the morning Monday that we found out that the main contractor hadn’t ordered enough tile for our new shower stall. OK, we get that mistakes happen and our designer has demonstrated trouble measuring. But the result was no work on the bathroom tile AND no work on the kitchen tile, which is extensive and piled on our hallway floor. Why didn’t the tiler work instead on the kitchen tile while waiting for additional bathroom tile? He said he didn’t want to work on multiple days, even though he does this all the time.

So no progress at all on tile and no plan to move forward.

The good news is that workers installed all the cabinet hardware (on the available cabinets—remember we’re still waiting for replacements because the designer mis-measured) and started to finish the trim. Some of the trim looks like crap as they try to reclaim original wood, but I’m hopeful that they will rectify this.

Yet without tile, we have no progress on installation of anything (think appliances, plumbing, electrical, lighting) that could make the rooms functional.

Our frustration is mounting with at least six weeks of delays at this point. We will likely forget this irritation when we have a kitchen and bath that we can at least use, at least temporarily.

I had hopes that the kitchen would at least be functional by our anniversary, Aug. 6, so we could celebrate with a nearly ready kitchen, but I’m not so hopeful. I do think our new shower may be ready when classes begin at the end of August.
