In the week since our new kitchen became largely functional, we have enjoyed our limited use! In the intervening days, the tile subcontractor finally finished the new bathroom tile and grout—fully six weeks behind schedule—and the plumber installed the bathroom fixtures. That means we can use (to a limited extent) the kitchen and the bathroom. In the bathroom, we can use the toilet and the sink, but not the shower until the walls are finished and we have a temporary shower curtain while we wait for the glass door. In the kitchen, we couldn’t use the stove or oven for anything beyond mild (non-smelly) things until the custom range hood was installed. That happened today. There is still a ton of finishing to do, but we are less than two weeks away! Here’s how the rooms look today:
This is the kitchen as Dan cooks dinner (with the hood fan running!):

Here’s the less-finished, but at least partially functional new 3/4 bath:

Next week, our mudroom and hallways should be painted and our furniture for the morning room should arrive. That means that our new spaces will be fully functional and that the destruction of the master bath can begin.
This is really our dream timing, despite the frequent delays. We really wanted to celebrate our 12th anniversary in the actual kitchen—and we did! I really hoped to have the 3/4 bath ready before my classes start Aug. 21–and they will! Our “morning room”, which will also serve as my office, will be complete by class time so that I can use the space to both get ready for class, do some planning and grading, and meet virtually with students.
That’s all the great news. Within the next two weeks, we have to move out of our bedroom, because demo and construction will include a wall there. That project is planned to take between 3 and 3.5 months, so likely until mid-November. Protecting the furniture will be a challenge, as will moving appropriate clothing while balancing not moving too much with the challenge of not a huge amount of space in our guest bedroom.
Yet those challenges will be greatly mitigated by our ability to have a beautiful new kitchen, bathroom, morning room and mudroom. We can’t wait for you to see them!
